How do vehicle keys fail or need repairing?

The most common issues with vehicle keys are:

  • A broken, worn, bent or damaged key including a snapped blade

  • The key fob or remote case is damaged

  • The transponder chip in your key is worn, damaged or has stopped working

  • Buttons on remote key fobs have lost their ‘click’

  • The key is jammed in the ignition barrel and cannot be pulled out

  • The car key blade has snapped off in the ignition barrel

Don’t get caught out, checking if you need a key replaced is as simple as checking your oil.
There are a few ways to tell if your car key is worn and will need replacing or a repair soon
  1. Look at your key. Can you see any excessive wear or cracks?

  2. Does your car remote work intermittently?

  3. Has your car remote buttons lost their ‘click’?

  4. Is it hard to turn your car key in the ignition, does it need a 'wiggle' to turn?

  5. Is your car remote case cracking and falling apart?

In any of these cases, stop using the damaged key, and call us to attend and repair or replace the key, before you end up in an emergency situation.

My car keys have snapped in the lock!

Although it may seem like a big issue, we can provide a simple and rapid solution for you. Whether you have broken your key in your car’s door lock or ignition, we can attend your vehicle, extract the key and provide a replacement on site.

We advise that unless you know what you’re doing, DO NOT try and extract the car key yourself. You could cause extra damage to the ignition or door barrel, meaning not only do you have to replace the key, but you will also need to replace the locks.

In any case that your key is not repairable, we can provide a full working replacement on site.

Why do I need a key programmed?

Most vehicles made after 1995 had an immobiliser installed to stop thieves from stealing your car even if they gain access to it.

There is a small transponder chip inside your car key that sends a signal to your car to let it know it’s ok to turn the immobiliser off and start the engine. Pro Auto Locksmith technicians will use specialist diagnostic tools to program and pair your new keys and transponder units to your vehicle.

We provide a full, comprehensive auto locksmith service allowing us to decode, cut and program vehicle keys wherever you are. This service also includes the erasure of transponders from the immobiliser “memory”, meaning we can get your vehicle to “forget” any missing car keys. So, if someone did find your lost keys, they would not be accepted by the vehicle and would not be able to start the engine, giving you extra peace of mind.
